Yesterday, it was announced that Freddie Prinze Jr. would be playing Kanan Jarrus, the cowboy Jedi and one of the lead characters in Star Wars Rebels. Now, Wikia—full disclosure, that's where I work—and a whole host of other sites have been sent more information about the new character who is sure to delight Star Wars fans young and old.

Kanan is one of the few Jedi who survived Order 66 and is a less traditional Force user because of it. Instead of using his lightsaber, Kanan carries a blaster—an uncivilized weapon, as Obi-Wan Kenobi would say—and is more of a gunslinger than your typical Jedi. He's also a bit sarcastic and mysterious, keeping his past a secret. Kanan knows that if it's discovered he's a Jedi, he could be killed. That's why he doesn't use a lightsaber anymore, doesn't follow the Jedi Code as he once did, and replaced his Jedi robes with armor. Nevertheless, a ponytail inspired by the look of the ancient Samurai holds a clue to his Jedi past.

But in this era of darkness, Kanan can't stay hidden for long. The series will chart Kanan's journey towards rediscovering himself, and he will play a role in the rise of the Rebel Alliance. He will find that, to help save the galaxy, he has to put down his blaster and pick up the lightsaber again, and once more become a Jedi Knight. As one of the images below hints, that's not without its dangers—Kanan will meet face to face with the Inquisitor, a villain tasked by Darth Vader to hunt down the surviving Jedi.
