Mark Hamill is an American actor best known for playing Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. He also portrayed the character in The Star Wars Holiday Special and, in character, narrated the Vector Prime television commercial. He voiced the ancient Sith Lord Darth Bane in the series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He will be reprising the role of Luke Skywalker for Star Wars Episode VII.

Outside of Star Wars, Hamill is also well known for his voice acting as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, its spinoffs, and the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum and its sequel.

Involvement in upcoming projectsEdit

Rumors about a future appearance by Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker have persisted for decades, ever since the sequel trilogy was first talked about after the release of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Hamill has said that George Lucas asked him in 1976 if he would be willing to reprise the role "around 2011," and early sequel trilogy concepts included Luke Skywalker anywhere between the age of 30 and 60.[1]

After the announcement of Star Wars Episode VII and the rest of the trilogy on October 30, 2012,[2] much attention has focused on whether Hamill, as well as Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, would return to his original trilogy role. While there has yet to be a confirmation, Hamill has acknowledged that The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm Ltd. have been talking to him and the other actors,[3] and that Lucas informed him and Fisher, prior to the announcement of the new films, that the sequel trilogy would be made. Lucas himself has said that the studio is negotiating with them, and that he believes Hamill and the others will return.[4]

On May 4, 2013, after a 30th anniversary screening of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Hamill revealed that he had attended a creative meeting with Lucasfilm President and sequel trilogy producer Kathleen Kennedy, where he spoke to her about his desire to see a better mix of CGI and practical effects that he felt were missing from the prequel trillgy. These comments suggested that Hamill will somehow be involved in the new Star Wars films. The actor further stated that he would like to see a younger generation of characters play the major parts, with the original characters in supporting roles.[5]

Luke Skywalker's roleEdit

A number of plot points for Luke's role in the sequels, most originating from George Lucas, have been suggested over the years. We have compiled these known statements, though many of these refer to the sequel trilogy in general, rather than specifically Episode VII.

  • In 1983, TIME reported that Hamill, Ford, and Fisher will portray their characters—Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia, respectively—in their 60s.[1]
  • In 1983, Mark Hamill said that Lucas asked him if he would be willing to return to the role of Luke Skywalker "around 2011" and play "an Obi-Wan type character, handing Excalibur down to the next generation."[6]
  • In 1988, Lucas hinted that Luke might have a love interest in the sequels. When asked by Starlog why Luke never had a love interest, Lucas said "You haven't seen the last three yet."[1]
  • In 2004, Hamill said that Lucas once asked him if he would be willing to appear in Episode IX. Lucas told Hamill that the appearance would "just be like a cameo. You'll be like Obi-Wan handing the lightsaber down to the next new hope." Hamill said he would, joking that "If [Lucas] wanted me to do light yard work at his house, I'd be out clipping the hedges."[7]
