Star Wars: The Old Republic, often referred to as The Old Republic, SWTOR, and TOR, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) produced by Electronic Arts' BioWare division. The game is a sequel to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. The game, which was first announced in late 2008, was released on December 20, 2011 as a subscription-based model. It has since become free to play, though accessing some areas of the game still requires a paid subscription.

The game is set during a previously unexplored era in Star Wars canon, several centuries after the end of Knights of the Old Republic. Prior to the events of the game, the first ancient Sith Empire returned after the galaxy had believed them to be extinct for over a thousand years. The Sith swiftly beat the Old Republic in the Great Galactic War, leading to a Cold War in which much of the game is set. During the events of the game, the Cold War sparks into a hot war with the advent of the Galactic War. Players can choose to play as six character types: bounty hunter, Imperial agent, Jedi Consular, Jedi Knight, Republic trooper, Sith Inquisitor, Sith warrior, and smuggler.

Since its release, The Old Republic has two digital expansion packs: Rise of the Hutt Cartel, and the forthcoming Galactic Starfighter. It has received generally positive reviews, with a score of 85 on the review aggregator site Metacritic.[1] The game is also part of a larger multimedia project that includes books, comics, short stories, and more that all take place during the same timeframe as the events of The Old Republic.
